Conduct Of The Honourable Member For Hampstead And Highgate

EDM number 433 in 1997-98, proposed by David Ruffley on 11/11/1997.

That this House deplores the arrogance of Government Ministers; notes in this regard that the honourable Member for Hampstead and Highgate, in her capacity of Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department of Environment, Transport and Regions, cancelled a visit to Bury St. Edmunds on 10th November with hopelessly inadequate notice; notes that her office told the relevant authorities in Suffolk that she was unable to attend ceremonies scheduled for 10.15 a.m. at Mount Road and 10.45 a.m. at Chequer Square in Bury St. Edmunds because she would instead be engaged in a debate in the House; deplores the honourable Member for Hampstead and Highgate for giving such an excuse to the people of Bury St. Edmunds when she knew that she would not be required in the House to attend the relevant debate until 3.30 p.m. at the earliest; concludes that she could and should have performed her duties in Bury St. Edmunds on the morning of 10th November; and requests that the honourable Member for Hampstead and Highgate gives an urgent public personal apology for the rank discourtesy she has shown to the people of Bury St. Edmunds.

This motion has been signed by a total of 8 MPs.
