Middle East Peace Process
EDM number 41 in 1997-98, proposed by John Gunnell on 21/05/1997.
That this House urges the Government to strive to move forward the Middle East peace process in partnership with it's European partners in order that the region does not once again lapse into instability and violence, to ensure that Israel adheres to the draft Euro-Mediterranean Agreement establishing an association between the European Communities and their Member States and Israel, which was considered by this House in February, on the basis that human rights and democratic principles in internal and international policy constitute an essential element of the Agreement; and notes that the ongoing expansion of Israeli settlements in East Jerusalem and the West Bank is a violation of international law and that the Israeli Government's commitment to the Har Homa settlement in Jabal Abu Ghneim in Arab East Jerusalem coupled with the withdrawl of the residency rights of Palestinians in Jerusalem is seriously undermining the peace process.
