Expelled Councillors In Hackney

EDM number 345 in 1997-98, proposed by Brian Sedgemore on 27/10/1997.

That this House congratulates the National Executive Commitee of the Labour Party led by the Prime Minister for expelling a number of councillors in Hackney for wrong doing, amongst whom was Councillor Gerry Ross who now leads a corrupt and discredited new political party; notes that prior to expelling 16 councillors the National Executive Committee had previously suspended six councillors for serious wrong doing and corrupting the council's disciplinary processes; notes that these six councillors led by Councillor David Phillips and Councillor Philip Pearson all joined the new party led by Councillor Ross and that Councillor Ross has condoned the corruption which occurred when they were in positions of power; notes that a number of official investigations are taking place into the actions of these councillors; notes that three of these councillors have joined the Tory Party; calls on all the councillors concerned, including Councillor Ross, to resign from the council rather than continue to debase and demean local government in Hackney; calls on the NEC to give assurances to the public in Hackney that they will continue to root out bad and corrupt councillors and will guarantee that Councillor Ross who has been expelled not once but twice from the Labour Party along with his colleagues will never be allowed back into the Party to sully its democatic processes.
