Conduct Of The Chancellor Of The Exchequer And His Advisers
EDM number 340 in 1997-98, proposed by Peter Lilley on 27/10/1997.
That this House notes that officials in the Chancellor of the Exchequer's office, in particular Charles Whelan and Edward Balls, have given contradictory briefings on the Government's policy on joining EMU, at least one of which must have been untrue; notes that such statements have been designed to serve the party political interests of the Government, putting news management above the interests of any clear statement of Government policy; notes that their irresponsible actions have caused uncertainty and instabilty in the financial markets; and calls on the Chancellor to account for the behaviour of his staff, and to explain his policy on EMU.
