Ban On Import Of Asbestos And Asbestos Products
EDM number 299 in 1997-98, proposed by Michael Clapham on 24/07/1997.
That this House notes the findings of the recent Final Draft Report on the Risk Posed by Asbestos and Substitute Fibres prepared for the European Commission DG 111, which concludes that exposure to white asbestos poses increased risks of asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma and that there is no threshold level of exposure which does not pose carcinogenic risks and which takes the view that a ban on asbestos imports is necessary if future generations are to be protected; and therefore welcomes the Government's current discussion with the Health and Safety Commission about the mechanism for introducing a domestic ban on the import, supply and use of all asbestos.
