Rat Infestation
EDM number 270 in 1997-98, proposed by Joan Walley on 17/07/1997.
That this House is alarmed at the reported increase in rat infestations of domestic properties; notes that defects in the underground drainage system allow rats to escape and sewage to seep into the environment; points with concern to the potential public health risks that this will lead to; calls upon the Government to ensure that water companies undertake sewer baiting programmes to the satisfaction of all local authorities in their areas; further calls on the Government to investigate whether materials used in underground drainage systems, in particular modern plastic, are being properly installed and are sufficiently durable to withstand rodent damage; and urges increased investment in public and private services to ensure public health standards are safeguarded.
