Yemen (No. 3)

EDM number 1765 in 1997-98, proposed by Jeremy Corbyn on 16/11/1998.

That this House notes with deep concern the escalating violence in the Republic of Yemen, with particular reference to a continuing number of bomb explosions throughout this year killing and injuring Yemeni citizens in many parts of Yemen, the sabotage of oil pipelines and oil facilities and armed conflict between security forces and tribes resulting so far in more than 200 deaths; notes with concern the continuing abuse of human rights and condemns the restrictions of freedom of speech and press freedom, with particular reference to a draft law on public demonstrations which threatens to diminish the right to free speech and expression; notes that continuing political unrest, which alongside increasing poverty and economic disorder, will serve to destabilise the country; and, in view of these circumstances, calls on Her Majesty's Government to apply pressure on the Republic of Yemen to safeguard fundamental human rights and urges the Yemeni opposition movement to respond positively to the appeal made by the leader of the Yemeni National Opposition Front and unite to realise their vision of national reconciliation; and urges the President of the Republic of Yemen to seek comprehensive national reconciliation with all peaceful and democratic political forces at home and in exile, with particular reference to the consequences of the Yemeni 1994 Civil War, in order to overcome the prevailing political and economic crisis and instability.

This motion has been signed by a total of 5 MPs.
