Foreign Nuclear Waste

EDM number 1762 in 1997-98, proposed by Alan Simpson on 12/11/1998.

That this House supports the Friends of the Earth campaign to stop Britain becoming the world's nuclear waste dump; notes that Japan, Germany, Italy and other countries use reprocessing at Sellafield and Dounreay to hide, shift and defer their nuclear waste crises; notes that Italian failure to build unpopular storage facilities means Italian nuclear waste, which should have been returned years ago according to government policy, remains in Britain; and calls on the Government to stop other countries following the Italian precedent by setting a timetable for the return of all foreign waste, to stop the fraudulent use of reprocessing to shift foreign waste to Britain by ordering that all foreign waste be returned within 10 years of being reprocessed, and to refuse any exceptions to this rule by British Nuclear Fuels to carry out substitution which would ameliorate foreign waste crises but leave a large volume of foreign nuclear waste in Britain forever.

This motion has been signed by a total of 5 MPs.
