Strokes
EDM number 1715 in 1997-98, proposed by Robert Syms on 29/10/1998.
That this House notes that stroke is the largest cause of severe disability and the third largest cause of death; welcomes the inclusion of stroke in the health targets contained in Our Healthier Nation, but is concerned that the priority attached to stroke is not being followed through with action, noting particularly the absence of stroke from the programme of National Service Frameworks, the lack of action on those aspects of the Clinical Standards Advisory Group report Clinical Effectiveness, which relates specifically to stroke and the omission of stroke from the Department of Health's National Priorities Guidance 1999-2000 to 2001-02 issued recently to health and social services in England; and urges the Government to reflect the impact of stroke on the nation's health by taking action to guarantee equitable access to organised stroke treatment and care, which is shown to significantly reduce both death and disability from stroke.
