Elections In Iran
EDM number 1713 in 1997-98, proposed by Ken Livingstone on 28/10/1998.
That this House notes that the elections to Iran's Assembly of Experts have resulted in over 70 per cent. of the seats being won by candidates of the Association of Militant Clerics and their allies but that, as all candidates had first to be approved by a supervisory board before they were allowed to stand and during that process almost all candidates associated with Iran's moderate president Mohammed Khatami were barred from standing, these elections have been exposed as an undemocratic farce with voters registering their opposition to the vetting of candidates by refusing to vote; and therefore calls on the Prime Minister to protest to the Iranian government and point out that such practices are unacceptable in any modern democracy.
This motion has been signed by a total of 20 MPs.
