That this House welcomes the decision by the OECD representatives to discontinue formal negotiations on the current text of the Multilateral Agreement on Investment; congratulates the French government for its determined opposition to the draft treaty; welcomes the forthcoming period of consultation with national governments, business, trade unions and environmental groups on an alternative investment framework; and urges the Government to set the agenda for the New Millennium by calling for a new investment agreement based on the principles of sustainable development, self-sufficiency for developing countries, core labour standards and an appropriate balance of rights and responsibilities for international investors and multinational corporations.
