Unsolicited Business Offers

EDM number 1643 in 1997-98, proposed by Ruth Kelly on 31/07/1998.

That this House notes with concern the current practice by some overseas companies of sending out unsolicited business offers that are designed to look like genuine invoices for goods that have never been ordered at prices vastly in excess of market rates; urges the Government to draw the attention of the Swiss authorities, in particular, to the practice; believes that while this practice may not contravene Swiss law, it runs contrary to UK goods and services legislation; and further believes that efforts should be made to publicise this questionable practice and remind British companies of the importance of vigilant credit control procedures to minimise fraudulent activity.
