Regulations On The Working Time Directive
EDM number 1637 in 1997-98, proposed by Christopher Gill on 30/07/1998.
That this House regards it as an abuse of parliamentary procedure for the regulations on the Working Time Directive to be tabled in such a way that there will be no opportunity to debate them in Parliament before they enter into force in October; calls attention to the extra administration and financial burden that they will impose upon British business; notes in particular the severe difficulties the regulations will cause in their rushed implementation, especially given the inadequate definitions of certain phrases in the regulations; and believes that it is totally unsatisfactory for the courts to be expected to provide those definitions through legal test when Government should be responsible and should be spelling out the implications to business through adequate drafting.
