Epilepsy
EDM number 1623 in 1997-98, proposed by Stephen Twigg on 28/07/1998.
That this House welcomes the adjournment debate on 17th June which drew attention to epilepsy and the fact that 969 deaths in the United Kingdom in 1996 were attributed to this condition; recognises that epilepsy is a common and serious neurological problem affecting 350,000 people in the United Kingdom; notes with concern that one person in 50 will develop epilepsy at some stage in their life; welcomes the recent NHS Executive consultative document, The new NHS: Commissioning Specialised Services; and urges consideration of the need of people with epilepsy as part of these new arrangements because access to specialist care is essential in order to reduce the condition's unacceptably high death rate.
