Availability Of Organs For Transplant
EDM number 1594 in 1997-98, proposed by Evan Harris on 22/07/1998.
That this House notes that thousands of people die each year of kidney failure, liver failure or cystic fibrosis while awaiting organ transplants; notes that a considerable number of potential organs are not available for transplant because relatives are in doubt about the views of the deceased; notes that in France organs are presumed to be available for transplant unless the donor has indicated a wish to the contrary and that relatives would still have a veto over donation in these circumstances; notes the Ten Minute Rule Bill presented by the honourable Member for Oxford West and Abingdon on 28th July calling for the introduction of the French system; and urges the Government to consider and consult on such a proposal.
