Snowdon Survey
EDM number 1572 in 1997-98, proposed by Mark Oaten on 20/07/1998.
That this House welcomes the publication of the Snowdon Survey 1998 and the launch of a four month consultation period; congratulates the Snowdon award scheme for undertaking such a substantial research work which reveals that barriers for disabled people entering work and staying off benefits are found in the current education funding system for disabled students; notes that funding levels vary widely across the United Kingdom and that access to information on funding entitlements is often haphazard; notes that the survey identifies three key solutions; calls on Her Majesty's Government to extend the disability students allowance eligibility criteria to include all disabled students regardless of the course or the level at which it is being studied; further calls for the establishment of a single disabled student body for England and Wales, similar to the Student Support Agency for Scotland; further calls for the creation of a national resource of accessible information on further and higher education funding for all disabled students; and further calls on Her Majesty's Government to respond to the survey and its recommendations.
