Green Transport Week

EDM number 1417 in 1997-98, proposed by Paul Burstow on 10/06/1998.

That this House welcomes the launch of the Environment Transport Association's Green Transport Week on Friday 12th June; notes that road traffic is projected to rise by 40 per cent. by 2010 and that it is estimated that road congestion costs British industry ú19 billion a year; further notes that motor traffic contributions to carbon dioxide emissions are forecast to rise to 28 per cent. by 2000; notes that the London Borough of Sutton will be hosting the national launch of Green Transport Week; congratulates Sutton for leading the UK consortium of local authorities in the ZEUS project (Zero and Low Emission Vehicles in Urban Society) which by working in concert with a number of European local government partners have made a major contribution to the development of the market for low and nil emission vehicles by using their combined purchasing power to reduce prices, promote technological advance and provide the necessary supporting infrastructure; and calls on the Government to use its own purchasing power further to expand the market for low and nil emission vehicles.
