Lottery Disbursements

EDM number 1377 in 1997-98, proposed by Nick Palmer on 02/06/1998.

That this House notes with incredulity the Lottery decision to spend ú2.7 million on a set of football medals; recalls earlier eccentric payments such as the Churchill Diaries purchase; and calls for the abolition of the cumbersome and opaque distribution of funds by anonymous boards in favour of a simple supplement to charities' income in proportion to donations, so that (a) the Lottery reinforces charities instead of competing with them and (b) fund distribution reflects the priorities of the British people rather than the whims of anonymous unelected individuals.

This motion has been signed by a total of 27 MPs.
