Organisation Of Airtours By British Companies
EDM number 1368 in 1997-98, proposed by Joseph Ashton on 01/06/1998.
That this House notes that the staff at Majorca Airport staged a work to rule for several hours on 29th May because they simply could not handle the 115,000 daily passengers; notes that British tour operators promptly called this a strike so they would not have to pay out compensation; notes that planes to Germany and Sweden were delayed by only three to four hours, yet British flights were delayed by up to 21 hours throughout the weekend due to the British tour operators' policy of filling every seat on every flight every hour of the day with no spare aircraft or spare crews standing by in case of emergency and or having crews working extra hours; and calls on the EC Transport Commissioner and the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions to impose restrictions to reduce the number of flights to Majorca by British operators by at least 25 per cent. to protect the interests and health of British passengers.
