Bear Hunting In Canada
EDM number 1336 in 1997-98, proposed by Lindsay Hoyle on 18/05/1998.
That this House condemns the hunting of endangered species, especially the hunting of bears in North America, where trophy hunters pay up to $18,000 to complete the so-called Bear Slam, involving the pursuit and slaughter of the four largest species of bear in the world, the black, brown, grizzly and polar bear; believes that protected status for bears should be imposed and enforced to stop this senseless killing of endangered wildlife; and calls upon the United Kingdom Government to put pressure on the United States Government to reinstate the ban on the import of hides of these endangered species, which was lifted 12 months ago.
