National Volunteers Week

That this House notes that it is National Volunteers Week from 1st to 7th June; welcomes the work being done during the week to recognise the important contribution made to society by existing volunteers and to recruit new ones; further notes with concern the evidence of the 1997 UK Survey of Volunteering that fewer volunteers are doing more; congratulates the National Centre for Volunteering, the Northern Ireland Volunteer Development Agency, Volunteer Development Scotland and the Wales Council for Voluntary Action for marking this event for the twelfth year; and calls on the Government to make every effort to encourage more people to take up voluntary activity, in particular by removing institutional barriers to volunteering as quickly as possible.
