Whaling By Japan And Norway
EDM number 1307 in 1997-98, proposed by Norman Baker on 11/05/1998.
That this House is appalled that Japan and Norway are killing whales in increasing numbers; is dismayed that Norway has begun the slaughter of almost 700 whales and that Japan has just killed over 400 whales within the designated whale sanctuary in Antarctica for spurious 'research' purposes; is gravely concerned at the impunity with which these nations flout the International Whaling Commission's indefinite moratorium on commercial whaling; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to strongly oppose any attempt to remove, undermine or relax the current moratorium on commercial whaling and to take a leading role in seeking a permanent ban on commercial whaling.
