Professional Boxing

EDM number 1289 in 1997-98, proposed by Lynne Jones on 06/05/1998.

That this House recognises that boxing of necessity causes chronic, cumulative primary brain damage with the additional risk of severe secondary brain damage due to intracranial haematoma resulting in death and, while recognising that good medical supervision and care can reduce the extent of the brain damage, accepts that, as the purpose of boxing is to inflict brain damage, it can only be prevented by stopping boxing; and therefore calls on the Government to introduce legislation to bring about the end of professional boxing.

This motion has been signed by a total of 20 MPs.
