Filwood Playing Fields

EDM number 1286 in 1997-98, proposed by Jackie Ballard on 05/05/1998.

That this House, observing that the Labour Party has in the past opposed the loss of playing fields and green spaces in urban areas, notes the anger among local residents in the Knowle West area of Bristol at the Labour City Council's intention to allow a bus depot to be built on Filwood Playing Fields; further notes that this green space was given to the people of Bristol by Lady Smythe, is the only green area easily accessible to the Inns Court housing estate and is regularly enjoyed by children and older residents; notes that Labour councillors have ignored a 1,000 signature petition from local people who are concerned about the excavation of contaminated land, the increased pollution from diesel fumes when the bus depot is in use and the loss of an amenity; and calls on the Prime Minister to investigate the actions of the Labour Council in Bristol which is bringing his party into disrepute.
