Sellafield Discharge Authorisations
EDM number 1243 in 1997-98, proposed by Matthew Taylor on 23/04/1998.
That this House is deeply concerned that the full re-examination of Sellafield radioactive discharge authorisations requested within three years by the previous Government in 1993 has not yet been completed; considers that it is inappropriate for the Environment Agency to be given priority to assessing new applications for increased radioactive discharges and for a new plant to manufacture mixed oxide fuel at Sellafield; believes that as there are clear dangers of plutonium proliferation from such manufacture and as the economic advantages to Britain of reprocessing at Sellafield are increasingly questionable, such a re-examination is urgently needed; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to ensure that the Environment Agency does not determine these new applications until it has completed the overdue promised full re-examination of authorisations.
