Brent Conservatives

EDM number 1229 in 1997-98, proposed by Ken Livingstone on 21/04/1998.

That this House believes that the behaviour of the Brent Conservative Group has not only brought shame on the Conservative Party but has had a damaging effect on the reputation of local government; notes that Ms Janet Graham, in a signed statement as part of her testimony at an industrial tribunal, claimed that senior Conservative Councillor John Warren made a 'rude and aggressive telephone call' to a very senior council officer demanding that Ms Graham should stay in her post which was then under threat; further notes that Ms Graham went on to say 'the result of this was my being slotted into the Deputy Manager's position for Willesden Green Library Centre'; believes that it is unacceptable for Councillor Warren to abuse his then position as Deputy Leader of the Council to secure a senior post for a Conservative activist who is now a Conservative candidate for Tokyngton Ward at the forthcoming elections; welcomes the referral of the case to the Council's external auditors; calls upon the Leader of the Opposition to clean up the grubby mess of the Brent Conservative Party which has treated the people of Brent with appalling contempt during such sleazy episodes as the Ad Shop affair and the Kingdom planning scandal; and urges the Leader of the Opposition to withdraw Conservative Party support from Councillor Warren and Ms Graham as candidates in the forthcoming election.
