North American Free Trade Area

EDM number 1223 in 1997-98, proposed by Tim Collins on 20/04/1998.

That this House welcomes the statement by the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives in the Daily Telegraph of 20th April that he would support associate membership of the North American Free Trade Area for the United Kingdom; notes the immense ties of culture, language, history, trade and family which bind the peoples of the United Kingdom to those of North America; notes that NAFTA represents an area with a larger gross domestic product and faster growth than the European Union; supports the vision of a free trade area without erosion of sovereignty; and urges a rapid and positive response to the Speaker's offer.

This motion has been signed by a total of 21 MPs.
