The Greenwich Judgement
EDM number 1206 in 1997-98, proposed by Edward Davey on 06/04/1998.
That this House notes the March 1998 edition of Merton News, a leaflet from Merton Conservatives which trumpets the high standards of education in boroughs like Kingston and Sutton and criticises education in their own borough saying 'Too many Merton children are educated outside the borough, especially in secondary schools in Kingston and Sutton'; welcomes and supports this Conservative endorsement for the quality of education in the Liberal Democrat-run boroughs of Kingston and Sutton; expresses concern that such leaflets may only serve further to aggravate the problems in planning both primary and secondary school places already experienced by the education authorities in Kingston and Sutton as a result of the 'Greenwich decision'; and calls on the Labour Government and the Conservative Party to end their opposition to the Liberal Democrat policy of repealing the Greenwich Judgement which would restore the rights of parents living, voting and paying council tax in boroughs like Kingston and Sutton to have the first choice for places in their local schools for their children.
