Mrs Mary Louisa Courtier
EDM number 120 in 1997-98, proposed by Tony Benn on 16/06/1997.
That this House wishes to congratulate Mary Louise Courtier, who lives in Chesterfield, on the occasion of her hundredth birthday which falls on 22nd June; notes that, born in Wales in 1897, Mary Courtier was a brilliant student in English and Latin, became one of the first women to be accepted at Bangor University and subsequently worked as a teacher; acknowledges that she was a gifted sportswoman playing tennis, hockey and golf, who won a medal for swimming across the Menai Straits and that she has travelled widely around the world many times, visiting India, Australia and South America; notes that she now loves reading and gardening; observes that as a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother she is devoted to her family and proud of their many achievements; and expresses the hope that she may enjoy many more years in her retirement, so that, in the year 2000, she will have the rare distinction of having lived in three successive centuries.
