Algeria (No. 2)

EDM number 1198 in 1997-98, proposed by Jeremy Corbyn on 02/04/1998.

That this House is gravely concerned that over 80,000 people have been killed in Algeria in almost seven years of conflict, and that in the past year thousands of men, women and children have been slaughtered, hacked to death, decapitated, mutilated, shot and burned alive in their homes, pregnant women have been disembowelled and children and basies thrown off balconies; notes that the massacres have taken place against a background of widespread human rights abuses by security forces, state-armed militias and by armed opposition groups; notes that no investigations have been carried out into these massacres and other abuses; congratulates Amnesty International on organising a lobby of Parliament on 1st April on Algeria's human rights crisis; notes that this lobby was attended by over 750 people; recognises that many, many more people throughout the country desperately want to see an end to this violence; and strongly urges Her Majesty's Government to take note of the considerable public feeling on this matter, and to use all its influence with governments throughout the world to ensure that the UN appoints a Special Rapporteur to investigate this matter so that a lasting and peaceful solution to the conflict in Algeria can be found.

This motion has been signed by a total of 36 MPs.
