Silicone Implants
EDM number 116 in 1997-98, proposed by Ann Clwyd on 12/06/1997.
That this House welcomes the Government's announcement of a review into the use of silicone breast implants; notes that 5000 to 6000 women every year are given silicone implants and that they have reported various illnesses, including chronic fatigue, the severe swelling of joints and muscles and constant pain; recognises that many women are not made aware of these risks before the implants are inserted and that the US, France, Canada and Australia have already implemented a moratorium on silicone breast implants; calls upon the government to ensure that all women are fully informed of these risks and in a position to give informed consent before the procedure is carried out; and further calls for an immediate moratorium on the use of silicone implants while the review is pending and for the Breast Implant Register to be made compulsory.
