Community Ownership Of The Isle Of Eigg

That this House congratulates the Isle of Eigg Trust on their successful takeover of the ownership of the island; praises the courage and determination the islanders have demonstrated throughout their campaign; trusts that the Government will provide social and economic support to the community to assist them in the relief of poverty and promotion of sustainable development on the island; recognises that the unique partnership between the community, the Highland Council and the Scottish Wildlife Trust sets a positive example of a viable alternative to the current system of landholding; acknowledges that many communities throughout Scotland continue to face uncertain futures; and therefore calls on the Government to establish a democratic system of landholding throughout Scotland to prevent similar land misuse and abuse.
