Green Taxation And The Budget

That this House congratulates the Chancellor of the Exchequer on the 1998 Budget Statement and welcomes the progress made towards a green taxation policy, particularly in terms of the measures on landfill tax, road fuel duty, vehicle excise duty, company car fuel scales and industrial energy efficiency; notes the further potential of green taxes to help create a sustainable economy and a just society through the reduction of pollution, the improvement of air and water quality and the reduction of taxes on employment creation; and calls on the Government to intensify its efforts comprehensively to assess the impact of different models of green taxation in achieving its social, economic and environmental objectives in time for the 1999 Budget.
