Republic Of Yemen
EDM number 1016 in 1997-98, proposed by Jeremy Corbyn on 12/03/1998.
That this House calls on the Government of the Republic of Yemen to immediately halt the trials of the 16 South Yemeni leaders in the light of the President of Yeman's recent call during Ramadam for all Yemenis 'to abandon hatred and distrust, close the chapters of past conflicts and open a new chapter for the future'; notes the immediate and positive response of the leader of the Yemeni Opposition Front and Rabitat Abnaa Al-Yaman (RAY) to that call; recognises this as an opportunity for the Yemen regime to swiftly begin a process of dialogue and reconsiliation with all peaceful political forces and to allow the safe return of those in exile as a result of the civil war and implement the Government's pledge to the United Nations Secretary General on 7th July 1994; and therefore calls on Her Majesty's Government to urge the Yemen Government to create the conditions for lasting unity and stability by putting in place a balanced political structure which allows the free operation and expression of all opposition parties committed to peaceful means and which guarantees full civil and political rights to all Yemenis.
