Illegal Sale Of Fireworks To Children

That this House notes Government statistics showing that in 1995 there were 1530 fireworks accidents requiring medical treatment, almost all occurring in October and November; is concerned that 820 of those injured were children under the age of 16 and of these 645 were aged 13 and under; is dismayed that under the Explosives Act 1875, from 1985 to 1993, only three convictions were achieved from just ten prosecutions brought for selling fireworks to minors; believes that although it is illegal to supply a minor with fireworks, this prohibition is not being properly enforced; and calls upon the Government to review the provisions and operation of the law governing prosecution of those responsible for selling or supplying minors with fireworks.
