War Toys
EDM number 80 in 1996-97, proposed by Tony Banks on 28/10/1996.
That this House notes with regret in the run-up to Christmas the concentrated advertising campaign on television directed at children to sell stereotyped toys; believe that encouraging boys to want war toys and other violent games is the start of a process of brutalisation which leads on to all the undesirable behaviour patterns exhibited by so many males in later life; calls for a ban on advertising war toys, together with a study into the likely connection between such toys and male violence; congratulates Selfridges on its decision not to sell toy hand guns; and encourages all parents not to purchase war toys or games portraying violence as Christmas presents.
