Labour Victory In Malta
EDM number 75 in 1996-97, proposed by Harry Barnes on 28/10/1996.
That this House congratulates the Malta Labour Party on its magnificent victory in the General Election in which it defeated the governing Nationalist Party who had held office since 1987; notes that the new Labour Prime Minister, Dr Alfred Sant, stood on a platform of opposition to Malta joining both the European Union and NATO; and further calls upon our Government to recognise the strength of feeling amongst the people of Malta for retaining the nation's neutral status and in opposing anti-social policies such as the Nationalist's introduction of VAT.
This motion has been signed by a total of 37 MPs.
