Violation Of Human Rights In Jamaica
EDM number 68 in 1996-97, proposed by Gerald Kaufman on 25/10/1996.
That this House expresses its disgust and revulsion at the continued violation of human rights in Jamaica as manifested in the mistreatment of prison inmates in that country; draws attention to the failure of the Jamaican Government to conform to and to fulfil the rulings of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, in that prisoners who have been on death row for more than five years continue to be held on death row instead of being transferred to alternative confinement, to the barbaric conditions in which many prisoners continue to be held, to the denial of access to medical treatment of prisoners in serious need of such access, and to the arrogant attitude of the Jamaican High Commission in London, which treats representations on these serious matters with lassitude and disdain; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to make urgent representations to the Jamaican Government in order to rectify a situation which places in doubt the fitness of Jamaica to receive economic aid and trading preferences.
