Labour Policy On Devolution
EDM number 662 in 1996-97, proposed by Alex Salmond on 13/03/1997.
That this House condemns New Labour's latest retreat on their timescale for setting up a Scottish Assembly; notes with dismay that New labour have been promising devolution since the nineteenth century and have spent the whole of the twentieth century failing to deliver; acknowledges that under New labour's best case scenario, Scotland would now have to wait until the next millennium for an assembly, and an additional two years for tax-varying powers; suspects that Scots are more likely to be on Calton Hill viewing Comet Hale-Bopp on its return visit before they get the chance to view the proceedings of any Labour-initiated assembly; recognises that this latest retreat is another devolution U-turn imposed by the London leadership; and further recognises that this underlines once again that New labour cannot be trusted to deliver constitutional change for Scotland.
