Royal Yacht

EDM number 630 in 1996-97, proposed by Tony Banks on 10/03/1997.

That this House notes that the 24-carat gold leaf on the side of the Royal Yacht 'Britannia' was badly scraped in a collision with the refuelling tanker 'Bay Leaf' off Karachi, which means the Phuket visit is now off; further notes that since 'Britannia' is to be decommissioned at the end of this year, whilst structural damage must be repaired to ensure the safety of crew and passengers, there is no justification for spending taxpayers' money on replacing gold leaf on a vessel which will be sold or broken up in less than 12 months' time; and considers that, with a little skill, a can of paint will do the job just as well.

This motion has been signed by a total of 14 MPs.
