60th Anniversary Of Tribune
EDM number 614 in 1996-97, proposed by Harry Barnes on 05/03/1997.
That this House warmly welcomes the 60th anniversary of the unique left-wing weekly newspaper, Tribune, which has been a fearless and eloquent thorn in the side of the Establishment, including successive Labour leaderships, since 1937; strongly endorses Voltaire's maxim of defending to the death the right to hold and disseminate dissident views; regrets, therefore, the decision of WH Smith to refuse to stock Tribune and other minority publications as a blow to pluralism and diversity in the printed media; and hopes that Tribune will continue to provide a wide range of left-wing writing for many years to come.
