National Head Injury Week

That this House congratulates those involved in National Head Injury Week 21st to 26th October for highlighting the needs of people with brain injury; recognises that present guidelines to assess the needs of those with brain injury inrelation to Care in the Community are not adequate; is further concerned that a survey conducted by Community Care magazine has identified a massive gap between supply and demand in showing that 63 per cent. of directors of social services believe clients' needs must be greater now in order to get an assessment of their needs than they were three years ago when community care legislation was implemented; notes that, following assessments, in one third of local authorities, the majority of those assessed will receive no service; and is greatly concerned that this situation will impact disproportionately on people with acquired brain injury who do not fit easily the current categories in the NHS and community care plan.
