UNIVERSITY OF ABERDEEN'S NEW RECTOR

That this House congratulates Dr Allan Macartney, MEP for North East Scotland, on his installation as the new Rector of the University of Aberdeen; recognises the importance of the position of Rector as the spokesperson for the student community in Scotland's ancient universities; recognises the Rector's important contributions as the defender of student interests in the face of government underfunding of higher education and the increased economic hardship faced by students as a result of government cuts in student grants, the abolition of housing benefit for students and the increased debt levels as a result of the introduction of student loans; recognises that Dr Macartney will be an effective campaigner for Aberdeen's students; and wishes him every success during his term of office.
