Replacement Of The Royal Yacht And Vsel

EDM number 484 in 1996-97, proposed by John Hutton on 04/02/1997.

That this House expresses its concern at the Government's decision to exclude any role for the private sector in the replacement of the Royal Yacht; notes with interest the proposals of the Britannic Project to construct two replacement vessels at the VSEL shipyard in Barrow in Furness, entirely with private finance; considers that this would provide a world wide showcase for the engineering skills of VSEL as well as creating 1,000 new jobs in an areawhere thousands of shipbuilding workers have been made redundant in recent years; and therefore calls on the Government to review its decision on the financing of the Royal Yacht in order to allow further consideration of the benefits to both the taxpayer and the shipbuilding industry of the Britannic Project.

This motion has been signed by a total of 20 MPs, 1 of these signatures have been withdrawn.
