MINISTERS' SEVERANCE PAY
EDM number 481 in 1996-97, proposed by Andrew Mackinlay on 04/02/1997.
That this House calls upon all Cabinet Ministers surrendering their seals of office, consequent on the formation of a new Ministry after the next General Election, not to take advantage of the technicality which will mean that between midnight on polling day and the time of their resigning from office a few hours later, their severance pay would be enhanced by an additional ú4,000 consequent upon the increase of Cabinet Ministers' salaries by ú16,000 triggered at midnight on polling day; and considers that this unwarranted and unjustified windfall would be deeply offensive to other public sector workers, those on low pay and the unemployed, for whom severance pay entitlement was for many little more than a dream.
