East London Line

That this House is dismayed at the reports that London Transport are considering an indefinite closure of the East London Line; believes that lack of Government support for the capital's underground system has led to such an appalling situation; regrets the enormous inconvenience caused to the line's 22,000 daily users since it was closed for refurbishment two years ago and to those potential users who would use it for commuting, business and leisure travel in the future given especially that it will be a vital link to the Millennium Site via the interchange with the Jubilee Line at Canada Water; congratulates the local authorities, private companies and others who are working with London Underground to promote the PFI project to extend the East London Line possibly as far north as Highbury and as far south as East Croydon; recognises such a line could prove to be a vital cross-London link between Gatwick and Stansted airport; and believes that if London Transport are forced to close the line indefinitely they should consider leasing the line to a company that will be able to extend it and have it operational before the Millennium.
