Building Research Establishment
EDM number 448 in 1996-97, proposed by Gwyneth Dunwoody on 28/01/1997.
That this House notes that the Secretary of State for the Environment is continuing to pursue the privatisation of the Building Research Establishment; notes that the consultation exercise carried out as part of the Prior Options Review of the Building Research Establishment demonstrated that there was no support for the privatisation of the Building Research Establishment in the construction industry; notes the major contribution made by the Building Research Establishment to human safety in the built environment over many years; notes in particular the contribution made by the Building Research Establishment to fire safety and efficient energy use; notes that the Building Research Establishment's impartiality and independence from any commercial interest have played a major part in the organisation's success and in its ability to collect research data from commercial organisations; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to take immediate steps to stop the privatisation.
