This this House commemorates the anniversary of the birth of Thomas Paine on 29th January; notes the continuing relevance of his writings, the Rights of Man and Common Sense, for Britons to become citizens not subjects; and looks forward, on the anniversary of the Leader of the Opposition's John Smi th Memorial Lecture on Democracy, to the next government drawing continuing inspiration from the works of Britain's foremost democrat.
