Save Our City Campaign

EDM number 395 in 1996-97, proposed by David Marshall on 14/01/1997.

That this House congratulates the Glasgow Evening Times on its Save Our City campaign and for highlighting the crisis facing the people of Glasgow; notes that the city has lost the equivalent of a 'Ravenscraig' in job terms every year since 1979; regrets the appalling statistics of poverty and unemployment - 79.5 per cent. of council tenants on housing benefit, 62 per cent. of youngsters receiving clothing grants, 47.9 per cent. of children qualifying for free school meals, 34 per cent. of the population living in poverty, 19.3 per cent. of males unemployed, 17.2 per cent of under 25s unemployed, 13.6 per cent. average unemployment, 57 per cent. of the unemployed out of work for over six months - and that the city has 50 per cent. of Scotland's poorest areas; also notes that 150,000 people travel into work in the city whilst only 33,000 travel out to work; recognises Glasgow's importance as Scotland's only metropolitan area; considers that there are genuine reasons for treating Glasgow as a special case and making additional resources available without taking anything away from any other local authority or organisation; and calls upon the Government to take immediate action to tackle the crisis facing the city.

This motion has been signed by a total of 25 MPs.
