Soya Beans

EDM number 375 in 1996-97, proposed by Joan Walley on 13/01/1997.

That this House notes that in March 1996 the US Company Monsanto was given approval to market processed modified soya bean in the EU; regrets that Monsanto and the American Soyabe an Association have decided not to segregate GM soya bean fromthe conventional crop; and calls on United Kingdom food manufacturers and retailers to avoid the use of the GM soya by publicly following the example of Nestle and Unilever's German operations where consumer pressure has led to the avoidance of GM soya beans.
